A dress
to remember.
The dress
came with them.
This wonderful shoot began at a hotel in Amalfi. As I understood it, they had arrived from Japan only the day before, so the jet lag was severe. But what I remember most clearly about that morning is the wedding dress.
We were making post-wedding photographs, and they had brought their actual wedding dress all the way from Japan. It made such an impression that I have been telling people about this shoot ever since.
The dress came with them.
“Auguri!”
at every turn.
I love starting at six in the morning. We walked through Amalfi towards Atrani to catch the first rays as the sun appeared from behind the mountain. I wanted us to be there at exactly that moment.
The dress took up almost the whole road. Every passing car—and I do mean every one—stopped so that people could admire it and call out “Auguri!”, the Italian way of offering congratulations. It was quite a procession.
We had barely walked any distance before collecting enough compliments for the next three weeks. In Atrani we stopped for photographs at sunrise, but the congratulations kept coming. People here know me, and the locals who were already walking their dogs or getting ready for the day greeted us on foot and from their cars. Again and again: “Auguri!”
“Auguri!” at every turn.
The formal portraits,
and the laughter.
I tend to fool around during a shoot. It is part of how I work with emotion: in a photograph, it can help to show a feeling a little more strongly than you would in everyday life. This is one still frame, after all, rather than a video showing every change of expression. I shoot in bursts of ten, so I can choose the moment when everything comes together.
Getting this lovely couple from Japan to laugh and join in with my silliness was not easy, but we got there. Alongside the serious, beautiful wedding portraits, we caught a few wonderfully playful moments. Those will stay with all of us.
The formal portraits, and the laughter.
A place. A feeling.
A story that’s yours.
Tell me a little about yourself.
I’ll take care of the light, the places, and the quiet moments in between.
In their own words.
Amazing! Gregory, who took the photos, not only took wonderful pictures, but also kindly guided us around the area in a way that was easy to understand for us, who don't speak much Italian or English. He was cheerful the whole time, and he also introduced us to lesser-known landmarks and recommended restaurants in the area. The recommended restaurants were of course delicious, and the photos were excellent and delivered very quickly! I'd like to ask him to be my photographer and guide again when I go to Atrani! (We brought these costumes with us)
